enthusiasts.

July 6, 2012 (Raleigh, NC) – Brian Shawcroft, AIA, an architect well known in North Carolina for Modernist residential design, will open his modern home and office in West Raleigh to design enthusiasts for Triangle Modernist Houses’  (TMH) “Thirst4Architecture” (T4A) happy hour and networking event on Thursday, July 19, from 6-8 p.m.

T4A events are free and open to the public. The host provides refreshments and TMH provides architecture-related door prizes.

Brian Shawcroft grew up in Nottingham, England. He graduated from the West Essex Technical College and School of Art in 1953 with an ARIBA degree. He interned for Tomei and Maxwell in London in 1954, Slater Uren and Pike from 1954-1956, Page and Steele in Toronto from 1956-1959, and with Eduardo Catalano in Cambridge in 1960.

Shawcroft finished his Masters in Architecture at MIT and Harvard University in 1960. From then until 1968 he was an associate professor of architecture at the NCSU School of Design.

For a time, he lived and worked with Harwell Hamilton Harris at Harris’ office on Cox Avenue. With architect Clay Taylor, he established the firm Shawcroft-Taylor in 1971, which lasted until 1990 when Shawcroft became part of the McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft partnership with Jimmy Edwards and Arthur McKimmon.

“Despite the fact that house design was never very profitable, Brian carried the torch for local Modernist architecture from the 1970s through the late 1990s,” said George Smart, founder and director of Triangle Modernist Houses, an award-winning, non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving and promoting modernist residential design.

Brian Shawcroft will be on hand during the event to discuss his home, which is located at 5215 Melbourne Road.

“We welcome architects, artists, designers, interior designers, realtors, engineers, contractors, property investors, building managers, Modernist homeowners, materials and furniture dealers – or anyone with a huge crush on great architecture,” Smart stressed. “T4A focuses on building relationships, generating passion about good design, creating strategic alliances, and connecting people to each other. There are no presentations or PowerPoint slides. Come join the fun and make new friends and contacts!”

Preservation North Carolina (PNC), North Carolina’s only private, nonprofit, statewide preservation organization, has also supported the TMH mission since the organization was established in 2007.

“Our first preservation easement on a mid-century modern houses was the [1948] Kamphoefner House in 1996,” said Myrick Howard, president of PNC. “But for that easement, that house would now be history. We share Triangle Modernist House’s enthusiasm for structures that serve as excellent examples of the Modernist movement and hope to continue to protect them through educational and entertaining events like Thirst4Architecture.”

“Thirst 4Architecture” events are intended to build relationships, generating passion about good design, creating strategic alliances, and connect people, according to Smart. “It’s all interaction. There are no presentations or PowerPoint slides,” he said. “Come enjoy the refreshments, the music by Third Expression, enter for door prizes, and make new friends and contacts. We’re delighted to have Nowell’s and PNC in on the fun, and the mission, with us.”

North Regional Library Hosts “Mayberry Modernism”

Triangle Modernist Houses’ George Smart will discuss NC’s modernist legacy.

George Smart, founder and director, Triangle Modernist Houses

April 25, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) — George Smart, founder and director of the award-winning non-profit Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH), will present his signature talk “Mayberry Modernism: North Carolina’s Modernist Legacy” at the North Regional Library, 7009 Harps Mill Road in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 11, from 7-9 p.m.

“Most people, even architects, are surprised that the Triangle has the third largest number of Modernist houses in America,” Smart said. “Mayberry Modernism discusses why we have so many and shares photographs of over 50 eye-popping houses from past and the present.”

“Mayberry Modernism” showcases the state’s surprisingly large collection of Modernist residences from the 1950s through today, particularly those in the Triangle region. Many of these houses are in great shape, but some are endangered and many have been destroyed.

Smart’s discovery of the Triangle’s large number of “livable works of art” in 2007 led him to found Triangle Modernist Houses.com. Today, the TMH website is the largest single archive of Modernist residential architecture, and those who design it, in the nation.

George Smart is a passionate advocate for Modernist architecture who continues to facilitate the public’s discovery of the state’s architectural legacy through TMH’s extensive website, public house tours, architecture trips outside the region, dinners with residential architects, and many other events. TMH also actively preserves existing Modernist houses by maintaining the state’s largest list of Modernist properties for sale.

The North Regional Library event follows a similar presentation Smart made at the Cameron Village Library in April.

“Mayberry Modernism” is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the library at 919-870-4000.
